On the subject of video game trailers, teasers, commercials and licensed music: I still think Ubisoft would not have been able to establish Assassin‘s Creed as the genre-defining IP it is today without its use of Teardrop by Massive Attack in this spot for the debut entry of the franchise.

This was just announced at The Game Awards and it is the first time in a long time that I‘m really excited about a new IP game from the first trailer alone. The setting, the vibe, the music – the perfect product placement. Trent Reznor working on the score. I‘m excited to check this out but even more so it shows that we are far away from all stories being told. And the endless connections that could be made. A Pet Shop Boys CD being played on a Sony player in a Porsche spaceship as the soundtrack of choice for a bounty hunter in the future? With almost every futuristic story, I can’t help but wonder „how did we get here?“ and recognizing the brands or the music is suddenly a clue that they have obviously survived whatever happened. Anything is possible in story-telling and it weirdly makes sense. Also it’s just cool. Don‘t even get me started on the tattoos or the blade.
